FAQs

Why are my chips not crispy in the air fryer? ›

To ensure your chips are crispy, be sure to completely dry your potatoes before you start cooking. Also, make sure you rinse them long enough for crispy air fryer potato chips. Using too much oil could also make your potato chips less crispy.

How long do chips take in an air fryer? ›

Tip the chips into the bottom of an air-fryer (the part with the paddle), add the oil, and toss the chips in the oil so they are evenly coated. Program the fryer to cook for 30 mins using the paddle. After this time, check that the chips are tender and cooked through. If they're not, cook for a further 5 mins.

Why don't my fries get crispy in the air fryer? ›

While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential. The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest. Instead of soaking them in large bowl of cold water, I like to use hot water to cook the potatoes slightly.

Can you cook chips in the air fryer without oil? ›

Chips are one of the easiest fast-food items to cook in an air fryer without so much as a drop of oil. And mastering the perfect seasoning mix is just as simple with this quick recipe. Chips don't have to be deep-fried to achieve the best flavour, in fact, fast-food-style potatoes are easy to replicate in an air fryer.

Why is my air fryer not crispy enough? ›

Why is my food not crispy in an air fryer? If your food is not crispy when coming out of an air fryer, you may not have patted it dry before putting it in to cook. Meat or proteins, or foods you may have washed, will fry better without the added moisture.

What temperature should I set my air fryer for chips? ›

Now, let's preheat the air fryer to 180°C, or use the 'French fry' setting. While it's heating up, add your potato slices to the basket and drizzle over the oil and some of the salt. Make sure that you don't overcrowd it; some overlap is fine but give your homemade chips plenty of space to crisp up.

What's the difference between fried chips and air fried chips? ›

If you're craving French fries but want to cut down on oil, the air fryer is your best friend. With just a fraction of the oil used in deep frying, air-fried French fries turn out golden and crispy on the outside while retaining a fluffy interior.

How do you keep chips from drying out in an air fryer? ›

Soak the fries in water for at least 30 minutes. Drain them thoroughly and pat them dry with kitchen paper. Put the fries in a large bowl, drizzle with oil and toss to coat. Transfer them to the air fryer basket.

What happens if you don't soak potatoes before air frying? ›

I wouldn't bother doing potatoes from the raw state, without soaking. It will take about a half an hour and the texture won't be nearly as rewarding. They just don't get very crispy without that cold soak.

Why are my chips burning in my air fryer? ›

You are doing at least one or more things wrong: Overcooking - cooking too long. Cooking at too high of a temp. Cooking on the wrong setting - Air Fry or Roast or Reheat.

What are the best frozen chips for air fryer? ›

Don't be confused if your bag of frozen chips says “oven chips”, they are perfectly suitable for the air fryer and come out tasting much better than if they had been cooked in the oven. The best frozen chips for the air fryer are any store bought brand such as McCains, Aunt Bessie, Sainsbury, Asda, or Tesco.

How do you're crisp chips in air fryer? ›

To get a really great crisp result, I suggest cooking for 10 minutes in a pre-heated air fryer. If you like them even crispier, you can go for a bit longer. If you just want them hot and aren't bothered about them being mega crisp, you'll likely find they're piping hot after around 5 minutes.

How do I get crispy results in my air fryer? ›

Add a Small Amount of Oil and Place in Basket

While we wish it were possible to fry without any oil, air fryers do need a little oil to make your food crispy (but you'll use a lot less than a traditional fryer).

Why aren't my air fryer potatoes crispy? ›

Don't forget to give the potatoes a thorough wash/scrub. Avoid Cooking Spray – Aersol cooking sprays will damage the coating of your air fryer basket. Tossing the potatoes in olive oil keeps them from sticking. Don't overcrowd the basket – the potatoes need room for the air to circulate and crisp up properly.

Why won t my chips go crispy? ›

Why are my homemade chips not crispy? It's likely that too many chips were cooked at once (a crowded pan is never a good thing) and doing so means the temperature of the oil decreases, resulting in soggy, greasy chips.
