Mildred D. Gibb

Mildred D. Gibb, a generous and spirited resident of Fallbrooksince 1973, departed this life on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at age 96. Sheleaves behind two sons, a daughter-in-law, a sister, two nieces, anephew, several grand-nieces and -nephews, more than a few friendswho thought she was pretty amazing, and a life well-lived.

Born in New York City in 1909 to a skilled tool-and-die-makerand his wife, she married fellow Knickerbocker David Gibb in 1940,a union that was to last more than 50 years. A pair of sons arrivedin 1943 and 1947 and, in 1956, the family moved to San Marino, nearLos Angeles, the result of Dave’s involvement in the fledglingmutual fund industry. Always having loved plants, wild birds, thenatural world and her God, Mildred became well-involved in thelocal garden club and Presbyterian church while she and Dave raisedtheir two sons, seeing them through college and into adulthood.

A truly skilled cook, she prepared a continuous, creative arrayof hearty meals, healthy snacks and memorable baked goods, including a cinnamon-dusted flat cake of deeply red-ripe half-plumscovered with her simmer-reduced plum syrup that simply rolled youreyes with pleasure, insisting a return for more.

In 1970, Dave retired and the couple built a house in the smalldevelopment surrounding Fallbrook Golf Club, and a new phase oflife together began. Theirs was a home whose door was always opento welcome family, neighbors, and friends from near and far to boththeir generous hospitality and tours of southern California’s manyattractions. The late-afternoon co*cktail flag flew often from theirfront-yard flagpole.

At age 85, Dave left this world in 1990, just a few months pastthe couple’s milestone of 50 years together. Mildred carried on hernew life alone, tending to her lush garden, volunteering at church, visited by her sons and daughter-in-law, surrounded by lovingneighbors and friends.

As years passed and age took its toll, Mildred’s independentspirit would not permit a move to a nursing facility, so sheweathered on in her home with the help of loving and skilledcaregivers. She died as she wanted, in her own bedroom overlookinga magnificent oak tree, a lush garden, and dozens of chirpingbirds.

She is survived by her sons, Roger (and his wife, Gerri) ofIrvine, Wayne, of Forestville (California), sister Lois Kelly, nieces Joan Kelly and Karen Bates, and nephew Kent Seyfer, all ofNew Jersey.

A service honoring Mildred’s life will be held at 1 p.m. onFriday, Oct. 21, 2005, at the Masonic Cemetery on Santa MargaritaDrive in Fallbrook.

Her friends and neighbors are invited to attend.
