Who Is The Strongest Character In Adventure Time? (5)

The theme song might claim "the fun will never end," but the Adventure Time TV series eventually did conclude. There's a reason it's one of the most popular cartoons to date. Throughout the series' run, however, protagonists Finn and Jake encountered a litany of idiosyncratic characters, many of whom were spectacularly strong. While Finn is the reincarnation of a powerful Catalyst Comet, he's merely human in his current life.

As such, Finn's victories against powerful foes come from a mix of teamwork, luck, and weapons (cursed or otherwise). While Finn may be the star, he's not actually one of the strongest Adventure Time characters. On the contrary, there are several more powerful than him. Finn shouldn't be counted out, but in a cast as large as Adventure Time's, there are quite a number of characters to sift through.

Updated on June 13th, 2024 by Robbie Robinson: Adventure Time remains one of the greatest cartoons to come from Cartoon Network. It has rich lore that, even after the end of the main series, can still be unpacked and debated. There's a giant cast of characters in the show and as the show branches off into miniseries, the cast will continue to grow. This list has been updated to add more characters from the series and to get this article up to CBR's current formatting standards.

In the latest TV Legends Revealed, see how a classic Adventure Time episode was forced to change its plot to be about...soup?!

25 Party God Is Easily Defeated In Battle By The Ice King

Voiced by Dee Bradley Baker and Cole Sanchez

Who Is The Strongest Character In Adventure Time? (7)

Debut Episode

Season 2, Episode 7 "Power Animal"

Powers & Abilities

Energy Beam

Size Alteration

Party God might be at all the coolest parties, but he isn't really that cool a dude. He's a mediocre boyfriend to Island Lady, and he's easily defeated in battle by the Ice King. Being a disembodied head doesn't really give him a practical advantage against fighters who have such things as limbs. That said, he's still a god, and that alone makes him one of the strongest Adventure Time characters.

Party God can grant wishes to those who earn his favor, shoot highly destructive energy beams from his mouth, become larger or smaller in size, and split into multiple tinier wolf heads. Fans also suspect that he can somehow perceive the locations of the best parties, but this isn't really a useful combat ability. Party God isn't exactly weak, but many other Adventure Time characters are more powerful than him.

24 Slime Princess Is The Weakest Of The Elementals

Voiced by Maria Bamford

Who Is The Strongest Character In Adventure Time? (8)

Debut Episode

Season 1, Episode 3 "Prisoners of Love"

Powers & Abilities

Slime Generation

Slime Assimilation

In the world of Adventure Time, there are four main elements. Each of them is represented by an Elemental Being: Fire, Ice, Candy, and Slime. Of the current Elementals, Slime Princess is the weakest of the bunch. She's a tiny little blob, one of the more regular victims of the Ice King's kidnappings, and was long unaware of her full potential.

Still, Slime Princess' power to shoot mass amounts of slime out of her hands comes in handy at times. In her full unleashed Elemental form, she can even absorb others, though she has no control and no memories of herself when she's stuck in this monstrous form. Thankfully, those absorbed by her were eventually shown to be safe. Slime Princess can apparently also hatch eggs, but this ability doesn't work as intended.

23 Finn the Human Can Hold His Own in Most Fights

The 10 Best Adventure Time Songs, Ranked

While most of the songs of Adventure Time were entertaining, the best tunes helped to shape the mood of the series.

Appropriately named Finn the Human, Finn really is just a human. He might not have the innate ability to control ice or harness fire, but he's a hero of Ooo for a reason. Finn is quick-witted and agile, but it's his indominable resolve that often carries him to victory. Throughout the course of the series, Finn battles demons, wizards and just about every lurking evil in the land.

Finn loses his arm in the episode "Wake Up and Escape from the Citadel," and a flower is planted in its place. Eventually, his grass sword replaces his arm. It's very versatile and is a rather impressive weapon. Finn won't be able to win in a one-on-one fight with Golb, but he's still an adept fighter fueled by determination and the love of his friends.

22 The Ice King Would Be Formidable If He Were Smart

Voiced by Tom Kenny

Who Is The Strongest Character In Adventure Time? (10)

Debut Episode

Season 0, Episode 1 (Animated Short)

Powers & Abilities

Cryokinesis

Extreme Longevity

The Ice King's magic power would be seriously formidable if only he had the brainpower to match it. The current Ice Elemental, his crown grants him immortality and control over the ice and snow, but at the tragic cost of his memory and rationality. He was originally Adventure Time's main villain, but as his sympathetic backstory came to light, he pretty much just became a minor nuisance.

At this point, the princesses pretty much just let Ice King capture them out of pity; it's not like he'll do anything worse than read embarrassing fan fiction. That said, his ice powers are quite intense. He can conjure up ice storms and blizzards, create warriors like the snowman soldiers, use his beard for flight, and tolerate extreme conditions. In addition, the Ice King has a special ability known as Wizard Eyes.

21 Flame Princess Has Laid Waste To The Ice King And His Kingdom

Voiced by Jessica DiCicco

Who Is The Strongest Character In Adventure Time? (11)

Debut Episode

Season 3, Episode 26 "Incendium"

Powers & Abilities

Flame Generation

Heat Sense

Fire melts ice, and the Fire Elemental Flame Princess has totally laid waste to the Ice King and his Ice Kingdom, making her an incredibly strong Adventure Time character. Her evil father, the Flame King, was terrified of her overwhelming power, which is why he had her banished from the Flame Kingdom as a young child. She's the current ruler of the Flame Kingdom, having overthrown her father in the episode "Earth & Water."

Given her dad's weirdly evil inclinations, she's often worried that she shares his dark side. Even in innocent scenarios, her power can be destructive: a single kiss from her former boyfriend, Finn, sets off a reaction that could have destroyed the world. Flame Princess fights with her so-called Flame Sword, and she can also produce flames from her forehead gem. She can also rap, if fans need another reason to love her.

Adventure Time's Kumail Nanjiani Bummed Over Fionna and Cake Recasting

Kumail Nanjiani has reacted to being replaced by Sean Rohani as the voice artist of Prismo in Max's new Adventure Time spinoff, Fionna and Cake.

Patience St. Pim is another Ice Elemental. She was born in an earlier era than The Ice King but survived the Mushroom War by cryogenically freezing herself. She's easily stronger than Ice King and, without the corrupting influence of the crown, more mentally together. More importantly, she has complete control over her ice powers, not to mention a pretty high degree of finesse.

Patience St. Pim is also the only Adventure Time character who knew of her Elemental status when she was first introduced. Further, it's Patience's influence that leads the other Elementals to develop their powers. Unfortunately, her plan to awaken all the Elementals' power was successful at unleashing strength but not successful enough at preserving everyone's minds. That said, mere ice powers aren't enough to be the strongest.

19 Princess Bubblegum's Knowledge Effectively Transforms Into Power

Voiced by Hynden Walch

Debut Episode

Season 0, Episode 1 (Animated Short)

Powers & Abilities

Remarkable intelligence

Candy Generation

If knowledge is power, Princess Bubblegum is one of the most powerful Adventure Time characters, and that's excluding her status as the Candy Elemental. Building the whole Candy Kingdom from the ground up, PB is the greatest scientist in Ooo and essentially a god to her numerous candy subjects.

While PB was slower to grasp her Elemental powers than the other Elemental princesses, she got the hang of it when translating her "magic" abilities into scientific concepts. In her full-on Elemental form, Princess Bubblegum was so proficient at controlling people that she even caused Patience St. Pim to fear for her life. Despite being a main character, however, PB isn't one of the top Adventure Time characters in terms of pure strength.

18 Lumpy Space Princess Is Technically The Strongest Elemental

Voiced by Pendleton Ward

Debut Episode

Season 1, Episode 2 "Trouble in Lumpy Space"

Powers & Abilities

Lump Infection

Elemental Neutralization

Lumpy Space Princess (LSP for short) really doesn't show her power much, so casual Adventure Time fans tend to know her as a whiny side character for the most part. Technically, however, she is the strongest of the Elementals. To be precise, she's an Anti-Elemental, possessing the Element of Lumps. This unique ability neutralizes the powers of all other Elementals, keeping things in check if any of her colleagues go rogue.

In fact, LSP used this power to save the day at the end of the Elements miniseries. She can also levitate, transform "smooth" creatures into lumpy ones with her bite, and, according to one video game, she can also spit rainbows and tear holes in outer space. Then again, Lumpy Space Princess isn't really interested in fighting as much as the other Elementals.

Adult Swim boss Suzanna Makkos is confident that Adventure Time spin-off Fionna & Cake will grab the attention of the original’s long-time fans.

Before Finn became the savior of Ooo, there was Billy the Hero. Billy was an expert in combat and there was no feat that he couldn't overcome. Billy's greatest accomplishment was defeating the Lich and locking him away. Considering the Lich is one of the most powerful beings in all of Ooo, Billy besting him proves just how powerful Billy was back in his day.

Unfortunately, as Billy grew older, he realized that he didn't want to fight anymore. He wanted a cozier life away from the mess of battle. He didn't have anything he wanted to prove anymore. Billy packed up his hero days and retired. He never got to finish his life in peace, as the Lich took its revenge and ultimately killed Billy. That being said, Billy served his time as the great hero of Ooo.

16 Orgalorg Is An Intergalactic Monster Who Looks Like A Penguin

Voiced by Tom Kenny

Who Is The Strongest Character In Adventure Time? (16)

Debut Episode

Season 1, Episode 15 "What is Life?"

Powers & Abilities

Cosmic Entity

Shape Alteration

Hunson Abadeer was not kidding when he claimed the adorable penguin Gunter was "by far, the most evil thing [he'd] encountered" in the episode "It Came from the Nightosphere." The Ice King's favorite penguin isn't even a penguin at all, but rather an intergalactic monster named Orgalorg. Orgalorg was once a destroyer of worlds and ruler of solar systems.

The monster was defeated by Grob Gob Glob Grod and banished to Earth, taking the form of a penguin after being compressed by the planet's gravity. This monster isn't stronger than other powerful Adventure Time characters because of its weakened form. That said, even the penguin Gunter possesses a few abilities, like basic combat, but Orgalorg is on an entirely different level.

15 The Vampire King Dominated the Earth

Voiced by Billy Brown

Who Is The Strongest Character In Adventure Time? (17)

Debut Episode

Season 7, Episode 7, "Everything Stays"

Powers & Abilities

Telekinesis

Teleportation

Before Marceline was the Vampire Queen, there was the Vampire King. He terrorized the human population with his band of vampires. He made his appearance in the mini-series "Stakes," which revolved around all things Marceline. He was actually the one who turned Marceline into a vampire during a fight in which Marceline was defending a group of humans against his vampire attacks.

While the Vampire King does end up losing, that doesn't take away from the mass quantity of power he once had. According to Princess Bubblegum, the Vampire King was such a pure vampire, his vampire powers were out of control. He was capable of warping reality itself as well as telekinesis and telepathy. He gets split into two forms: one is a lion and the other is the cloud-like essence of his vampirism. Since he's been bested by Marceline, the Vampire King is placed lower than her. He's a strong foe, no doubt, but can't compete with the stronger characters.

14 Marceline Is The Ultra-Cool Vampire Queen

Voiced by Olivia Olson

Season 1, Episode 12 "Evicted!"

Powers & Abilities

Soul Absorption

Immortality

Adventure Time: Everything You Didn't Know About Princess Bubblegum

There is a lot to learn about Princess Bubblegum including how she communicates with her pet unicorn and so much more!

Half-human, half-demon, and all-vampire, Marceline the Vampire Queen is definitely one of the coolest Adventure Time characters. She took powers from other vampires by sucking out their souls, but she doesn't need to suck souls or even blood; just drinking the color red is enough sustenance for her. Marceline's powers include levitation, pyrokinesis, telekinesis, invisibility, necromancy, monster transformations, and some exceptional bass guitar playing.

After the Vampire King is absorbed, Marceline learns how to transform into a dark cloud using his vampiric essence. Marceline is also effectively immortal — as long as she avoids sunlight and conflicts with ghosts, of course. As she says in the episode "Heat Signature," dealing with ghosts is "like a rock-paper-scissors thing."

13 Jake's Shapeshifting Powers Are Nearly Limitless

Voiced by John DiMaggio

Debut Episode

Season 0, Episode 1 (Animated Short)

Powers & Abilities

Shapeshifting

Unarmed Combat

Jake's shapeshifting powers are nearly limitless in Adventure Time. Although there is a technical limit to how far he can stretch, he can do practically anything in most cases. The only reason he doesn't instantly solve 95% of the problems facing the Land of Ooo is that he's just too lazy. The source of Jake's powers was once believed to be either magic or a mutation.

"Joshua and Margaret Investigations" revealed the true cause of his unique nature: he's actually half-alien. His dog dad was impregnated by the evil alien Warren Ampersand, who wanted to use Jake to enhance his own powers but was eventually defeated by his offspring. Jake can also fight, considering his physical strength and durability, especially when he turns his arms and legs into weapons.

12 Goliad And Stormo Are Eternally Locked In A Psychic Battle

Voiced by Wendy Linehan and Henry Linehan

Who Is The Strongest Character In Adventure Time? (19)

Debut Episode

Season 4, Episode 10 "Goliad"

Powers & Abilities

Telekinesis

Telepathy

Goliad and Stormo are two immortal beings forever locked in a psychic battle that neither can win. Princess Bubblegum created Goliad first as a suitable successor to the throne. Bubblegum's own hair was used to create Goliad, but the creation ended up reflecting some of the darker aspects of her creator. Goliad's mind control abilities are a scary yet understandable progression of PB's more dictatorial tendencies.

The only way to stop Goliad from wreaking havoc was to create an equally powerful creature that would stand for good rather than evil. Stormo was created from the same recipe as Goliad but with one key difference: instead of PB's hair, Finn's hair was used. These two Adventure Time characters are exactly as strong as each other.

10 Best Episodes Of Adventure Time (According To IMDb)

Adventure Time has cemented itself as a classic cartoon from our childhood. Here are the ten best episodes according to IMDb.

Magic Man was as mischievous as he looked. He thrived on being as insufferable as possible and was a major pain in the neck for Finn and Jake. He has a massive list of transgressions against Finn and Jake. He snatched away Jake's perfect sandwich and left him with a riddle to solve in the episode "Time Sandwich." He even turned Finn and Jake into birds in the episode "Food Chain."

With all that in mind, Magic Man had a load of magic tricks up his sleeve. He could teleport, turn people into different things, and even make a world inside his own body. While he was once one of the strongest magicians in Ooo, he loses all of his powers to Betty. He might not be one of the strongest in the current timeline of Ooo, but he was an unbeatable pest for a lot of the series.

10 Betty Now Has Access To All Of Magic Man's Powers

Voiced By Lena Dunham and Felicia Day

Who Is The Strongest Character In Adventure Time? (22)

Debut Episode

Season 3, Episode 20 "Holly Jolly Secrets Part II"

Powers & Abilities

Magical strength

Teleportation

The being formerly known as Magic Man was once one of the most powerful wizards in the world. The mischievous criminal brother of Grob Gob Glob Grod, his deeds include turning Finn the human into a giant foot, breathing life into miniature clones of the people of Ooo, creating a time bubble, and making Finn and Jake reincarnate into various levels of the food chain.

In a freak accident, Ice King's time-displaced former girlfriend Betty received all of Magic Man's powers. Betty continued to try to use her powers even more obsessively to find a cure for the Ice King's condition, while Magic Man transitioned into a powerless life as Normal Man and, eventually, King Man. Betty has since fused with GOLB, becoming a brand-new being called GOLBetty. Betty is the strongest magician in all of Ooo, so she deserves to be among the strongest Adventure Time characters.

9 Abraham Lincoln Somehow Gains Immortality As The King Of Mars

Voiced by Pendleton Ward

Who Is The Strongest Character In Adventure Time? (23)

Debut Episode

Season 0, Episode 1 (Animated Short)

Powers & Abilities

Levitation

Immortality

Abraham Lincoln's involvement in the Adventure Time universe goes back to the original pilot episode made for Nickelodeon, in which the beloved leader was "transported back in time... and to Mars!" In the series proper, Honest Abe still resides on Mars, but there's no time travel necessary to meet him, at least before the episode "Sons of Mars."

While Lincoln somehow gained immortality as the King of Mars, he willingly sacrificed his long life to save Jake's soul from the grasp of Death. His greatness is remembered on Mars with a memorial similar to the real Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Rebecca Sugar, creator of Steven Universe, said that "he's Jesus" on Archive, but she may have been talking about his cultural influence.

Fionna and Cake Showrunner Reveals If Finn and Jake Return in Adventure Time Spinoff

Adam Muto confirms that Finn and Jake will make appearances on the Adventure Time spinoff series Fionna and Cake, coming to Max.

When the denizens of Ooo take the Lord's name in vain, they're usually referencing this Lord — or at least one of their multiple personalities. Grob Gob Glob Grod has four faces, each with a different name and voice. Sharing one body, they reside primarily on Mars but have the ability to fly throughout all of space, dispensing justice when necessary. Despite being so widely worshiped, Grob Gob Glob Grod is not an invincible being.

Martin Meekins' spaceship destroyed their body in "Astral Plane," and now they're merely floating heads orbiting Earth. That said, their defeat sparked a genuine existential crisis for Finn, cementing Grob Gob Glob Grod as one of the strongest Adventure Time characters. With abilities like levitation, flight, telekinesis, and triangulation, it's not surprising that he's so powerful.

7 Hunson Abadeer Is Deathless — A Level Beyond Immortal

Voiced by Martin Olson

Who Is The Strongest Character In Adventure Time? (26)

Debut Episode

Season 2, Episode 1 "It Came from the Nightosphere"

Powers & Abilities

Deathless

Soul Stealing

Hunson Abadeer, Lord of the Nightosphere, couldn't eat Orgalorg's soul, but that one area of weakness doesn't negate his overall superior strength. With some effort, Finn could defeat even Orgalorg's full-fledged form, whereas Hunson simply could not be overpowered. A demon of chaotic evil, Hunson is "deathless," a level beyond immortal.

Hunson can suck souls, shapeshift, and regenerate, while his combination of strength and flexibility makes him superior in combat. That said, Hunson's soul-stealing powers are arguably the most critical ability in his arsenal. Some of his magical abilities come from the Nightosphere Amulet, which can be wielded by others but at the cost of turning them demonic.

6 The Cosmic Owl's Powers Can Best Be Described As Abstract

Voiced by Jeremy Shada and M. Emmet Walsh

Who Is The Strongest Character In Adventure Time? (27)

Debut Episode

Season 1, Episode 3 "Prisoners of Love"

Powers & Abilities

Indestructibility

Foresight

The Cosmic Owl's powers are more abstract, as he exists mainly within the subconscious realm. While he's never been seen in combat and can't be judged on those grounds, he's still one of the strongest Adventure Time characters due to a combination of divine status, universal reach, and apparent indestructibility.

A vision of the Cosmic Owl always signifies something important, and he appears mostly in people's dreams. Sometimes he foretells prophecy; other times, he gives blunt personal criticism and life advice. He has the power to make important dreams come true. He's also the best at board games, and always a welcome guest at Prismo's parties.
